DR. JACK E. THOMAS, PH.D., HEALTH SERVICE PROVIDER IN PSYCHOLOGY (HSPP) IN INDIANA

Health Service Provider In Psychology (HSPP) in Indiana

My first job as a Psychologist in the late seventies was at The Reception-Diagnostic Cener (RDC),Indiana Department of Correction. I had a Basic License. At the time, two years of supervision from a fully licensed Psychologist was required. Before I took my second job at Fort Wayne State Hospital-Developmental Center, I had earned my Indiana Private Practice license. Finally in 1985, after passing the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP)

and passing Indiana’s Jurisprudence Exam , I earned the HSPP credential. I began my professional career in earnest. This important credential led to the most amazing opportunities among them was serving on the Advisory Board for Midtown Mental as a member then as President for another two  years. The credential has allowed me to contract as a Medical Advisor to U.S. Federal Administrative Appeals Judges, which I’ve done for over 30 years. At Fort Wayne State (DD) Hospital  I  developed a center-wide training program for developmentally disabled patients  and did in-house differential diagnosis for patients with psychiatric disorders.  At New Castle (DD) Hospital I  Directed Professional Services, was Liaison to the Human Rights Committee and served on the Executive Board. In my private practice I’ve treated a wide variety of patients and I’ve had a number of consulting contracts over the years. I’ve held faculty positions at Indiana University-Bloomington and during my faculty years I participated in the Psychology-Brain Sciences Department Centennial celebration of the William Lowes Bryan’s research lab at IU. The oldest continuing psychology research lab in America. At Ball State University, I taught doctoral students iMulticultural Counseling. Finally, at Martin University ( Predominantly African American University), for 30 years I taught several graduate courses (every semester including the summer-and Directed Clinical Development. I helped to establish agreements with Hospitals, clinics for field Training  of Practicum and Internship Master’s students. During my tenure at Martin I oversaw the training of over 200 Master’s degree recipients.  I made a Promise to Martin

University Founder, the late Father Boniface Hardin “ I will stay as long as I am needed.”

A promise kept!

“Reasons Why the HSPP Credential is Important

Independent Practice: Without an HSPP endorsement, a licensed psychologist in Indiana cannot practice or see clients independently.

Supervision Restrictions: Non-HSPP licensed psychologists are legally restricted to practicing either under the direct supervision of an HSPP psychologist (while accumulating hours for endorsement) or under a specific limited license.

Clinical Authority: The credential authorizes psychologists to directly provide clinical patient services, including psychological assessment, psychotherapy, testing, and treatment planning in private practices, hospitals, and clinics.

Additional Training Proof: Earning the HSPP endorsement proves that a psychologist has completed Indiana’s required 1,600 hours of post-doctoral supervised professional experience (including at least 900 hours of direct patient care) on top of their doctoral internship…”
